WooCommerce bulk edit usually “does nothing” for one of two reasons: the products are variable, and their prices live on each variation, not on the parent product you ticked; or the change only reached the products visible on the current page. You can bulk edit simple products from Products > All Products, variations from each product’s Variations tab, and a whole catalog with a CSV export and import.
Why it happens
- Variable products are skipped. The bulk editor on the All Products screen works on simple products. WooCommerce’s own documentation says it “cannot edit the complexities of variable, grouped, or other complicated products”. A variable product has no price of its own: the price you see is taken from its variations.
- Only the current page is edited. Bulk edit only applies to the products you can see and tick. With 20 products per page and 600 products in a category, ticking “select all” changes 20.
- The sale price is not lower than the regular price. WooCommerce only shows a product as on sale when the sale price is below the regular price. If your new sale price is equal or higher, nothing changes on the shop page.
- An old sale schedule. If a product still has sale dates in the past or in the future, the new sale price may not show today. The All Products bulk editor has no fields for sale dates, so it can’t clear them.
- Another plugin or a cache. Pricing, wholesale, currency or multilingual plugins can overwrite or hide the price you set. Page caches and the variable price cache can also keep showing the old price for a while.
- A slow or large request. Hundreds of products per page can make the save time out halfway, so some products change and others don’t.
How to check it yourself
- Look at the product type. In Products > All Products, use the product type filter at the top of the list and choose “Variable product”. If the products that didn’t change show up there, that’s your answer.
- Count what you selected. Tick the products and look at how many are listed in the bulk edit box. Compare it with the total number of products in your filter.
- Open one product that didn’t change. In Product data > General (simple) or in each variation (variable), check the regular price, the sale price and the “Schedule” dates.
- Compare with the shop page. Open the product in a private window. If the admin shows the new price and the shop shows the old one, the problem is a cache or another plugin, not the bulk edit.
- Test with a single product. Bulk edit one simple product with no other pricing plugins active. If that works, add plugins back one by one.
How to fix it
Simple products, one category at a time:
- Go to Products > All Products and filter by category or type.
- Open Screen Options at the top right and raise Number of items per page (for example to 200). Don’t go too high: very large pages can time out.
- Tick the products, choose Bulk actions > Edit and click Apply.
- In Price, choose “Change to”, “Increase existing price by (fixed amount or %)” or “Decrease existing price by (fixed amount or %)”. Type
10%for a percentage or5for a fixed amount. - For an offer, in Sale choose “Set to regular price decreased by (fixed amount or %)” and type, for example,
20%. To remove the offers, choose that same option and leave the value blank or type0. - Click Update and repeat for the next page.
Variable products, one product at a time:
- Open the product and go to Product data > Variations.
- In the Bulk actions dropdown, choose “Set regular prices”, “Set sale prices”, the increase or decrease options, or “Set scheduled sale dates”.
- Type the value when asked. The action applies to all variations of that product and saves at once.
Many products, including variations (CSV):
- Go to Products > All Products > Export and export at least the columns ID, Type, SKU, Parent, Regular price, Sale price, Date sale price starts and Date sale price ends.
- Edit the prices in a spreadsheet. Variations are rows of their own, with
variationin the Type column. - Go to Products > All Products > Import, choose the file and tick Update existing products. WooCommerce matches rows by ID or SKU.
- Check the column mapping and run the import. Keep the original file: it is your only way back.
If the admin is right but the shop is wrong: clear your page cache and CDN, then go to WooCommerce > Status > Tools and run the tool to clear WooCommerce transients. If you use a multilingual plugin, check that the translated copies of the product got the new price too.
How to stop it from happening again
The core tools work, but each one covers part of the job: the list skips variations, the Variations tab works one product at a time, and a CSV import has no preview or undo. That gap is what our plugin BulkPilot fills. It shows products with their variations in one spreadsheet, so you can filter, say, a category and change regular and sale prices for all of them together, with rules such as “sale price = regular price − 25%” and rounding to endings like .99. Before saving, it shows a before → after preview with the number of items that will change, and it refuses to save a sale price above the regular price or invalid dates. Big jobs run in the background with Action Scheduler, so they don’t stop halfway if you close the page, and every change goes to a history where you can undo the whole job. It saves through WooCommerce itself, so caches and other plugins see the change. It costs 39 USD a year for one site or 79 USD for life, and you can try it in the demo. If you only change the prices of a few simple products twice a year, the core bulk edit is enough.
FAQ
Can I bulk edit variation prices in WooCommerce without a plugin? Yes, one product at a time from its Variations tab, or for the whole store with a CSV export and import using “Update existing products”.
How do I put a whole category on sale?
Filter the product list by that category, tick the products and use Bulk actions > Edit > Sale > “Set to regular price decreased by” with a percentage such as 20%. Variable products in that category need their variations edited separately.
How do I remove all sale prices at once?
In the bulk edit box, choose Sale > “Set to regular price decreased by” and leave the value blank or type 0. For variations, clear the sale price from the Variations tab or with a CSV import.
Can I schedule a sale in bulk? Not from the All Products list. Use “Set scheduled sale dates” in each product’s Variations tab, or the “Date sale price starts” and “Date sale price ends” columns in a CSV import.
Can I undo a bulk price change? WooCommerce has no undo for bulk edits. Export your products to CSV before any big change so you can import the old prices back.
